Army Cpl. Leigh W. Widel - Memorial Day Tribute

U S Memorial Day Weekend: Honoring Our Heroes

Tributes & Reflections May 25, 2026 4 min read

Memorial Day weekend is a time when Siouxland gathers with family, fires up the grill, and enjoys the first warm days of summer — but at its heart, this weekend is about honoring the brave men and women who gave everything for our country.

This year, The Siouxville Grinch pauses the mischief and the green fur to stand in deep respect for our fallen heroes. Freedom has never been free, and the sacrifices made by generations of service members deserve to be remembered, spoken aloud, and carried forward.

A Tribute to Army Cpl. Leigh W. Widel

Among the many heroes remembered this weekend is Army Corporal Leigh Wilbur Widel, a young man from Woodbury County, Iowa, who served during the Korean War. Cpl. Widel was a member of the 2nd Infantry Division, 38th Field Artillery Battalion. He was captured during the harsh winter of 1950 and died as a prisoner of war in February 1951.

He left behind a wife, Betty Jean, and three very young daughters — Judy, Diane, and Sandra. His courage, service, and sacrifice remain part of our region's history — and part of our responsibility to remember.

Why We Remember

Memorial Day is not about politics, parties, or parades. It is about people — sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, parents, neighbors — who never came home.

It is about the empty seat at the table.
The folded flag.
The name etched in stone.
The stories passed down so they are never forgotten.

From The Siouxville Grinch Family to Yours

Even a Christmas-loving Grinch knows the importance of gratitude. This weekend, we step back from the holiday fun and take a moment to honor the heroes who made our celebrations — and our freedoms — possible.

We remember. We honor. We thank you. 💚 U.S.

Wishing everyone a meaningful and peaceful Memorial Day Weekend.
